Ferex road plates
Do they really float?
In projects where water and soft ground are a factor, you want certainty. No guesswork, just a solution that works. Ferex road plates are used where there is no solid ground.

Floating decking panels. We regularly come across projects where composite panels are installed in water. They stay afloat, even under (heavy) loads. But how does it actually work?
Find out here what makes our floating slabs float, and see all the real-world examples.
In brief
The large-format Heavy Duty road plates are lightweight. As the name might suggest, the plates are not made entirely of solid composite (glass fibre reinforced plastic) but the interior features air chambers. These air chambers are filled with special foam.
The interlocking tongue-and-groove joints also create an almost seamless surface, which greatly improves load distribution. So the more panels we join together, the greater the buoyancy of the platform.
So, the way it works is actually quite simple. But what does that look like in practice? The best way to see this is by looking at project reports for a range of different applications:
Very wet ground can cause significant delays to a construction project. The Ferex system can provide a solution in such cases. If a project comes to a standstill because heavy traffic can no longer access the construction site, the solution can be implemented within a day. A good example of this is the work being carried out at a solar park in Overijssel. Even when space for equipment is limited, expansion can be easily achieved by creating extra space on the water.
The events, hospitality and festival sectors are increasingly asking for safe solutions to add that extra touch: a larger terrace, challenging obstacles, a temporary stage or a mooring point for water sports events.
As safety is paramount here too, correct installation is essential. Tests carried out in recent years have shown that we can be confident the Heavy Duty composite decking will remain afloat in all conditions… provided, of course, that they are installed correctly!
Floating structures offer endless possibilities. But is this really the best solution for your project or event? We’d love to find out together!
